It is becoming increasingly difficult to differentiate between President Obama’s policies — largely inflicted through the unelected bureaucracy with little if any input from Congress — and sheer malice. For example, the War on Coal, which he is waging through the ideologically deranged EPA, is killing jobs and raising the cost of not only energy but everything else you buy with no discernable benefit to anyone.
From a study by the Heritage Foundation on new EPA regulations:
These regulations will act as a major energy tax that would negatively impact American households. …
It will cost more to heat, cool, and light homes, and to cook meals. These higher energy prices will also have rippling effects throughout the economy. As energy prices increase, the cost of making products rises. Higher operating costs for businesses will be reflected in higher prices for consumers. Because everything Americans use and produce requires energy, consumers will take hit after hit. As prices rise, consumers buy less, and companies are forced to shed employees, close entirely, or move to other countries where the cost of doing business is lower. The result is fewer opportunities for American workers, lower incomes, less economic growth, and higher unemployment.
The goal is to destroy the coal industry, which is the main source of electricity for 21 states. Expected results of the new regs by the end of 2023 include a loss of nearly 600,000 jobs.
That’s okay. Some need to be sacrificed to save the world from global warming. It’s all part of Obama’s master plan to seize control of the planet’s climate as he did the nation’s health insurance.
Except that even if you are willing to believe, contrary to the evidence, that warming is somehow a problem, and even if you have taken the great leap of faith and believe that the climate is determined by human carbon emissions, the new War on Coal initiatives will have zero effect on it.
From the study:
The EPA’s New Source Performance Standards and all other regulations aimed at reducing greenhouse gas emissions will have no meaningful effect on global climate change. The EPA admitted this in its own proposed rule writing that “this proposed rule will result in negligible CO2 emission changes, quantified benefits, and costs by 2022.”
Hundreds of thousands of jobs will be lost, destroying vast sums of wealth before they are even created by forcing Americans to sit idle, even as the price of everything is pushed aggressively upward — and for what?
To make a gesture on behalf of the sacred polar bears? For the sheer joy of controlling other people’s lives?
Who knows? Who cares?
All that matters is that the most powerful branches of the government — the Executive Branch and the fourth “Administrative Branch” — are clearly opposed to the best interests of the American people. The Founding Fathers foresaw this eventual inevitability, and arranged the Judicial and Legislative Branches so as to provide resistance to tyranny.
The deteriorating Judicial Branch is already all but useless. The Supreme Court has ruled that the EPA can literally regulate our very breath. The DC Court of Appeals — responsible for putting a brake on the unconstitutional excesses of the federal bureaucracy — will now be stacked with leftist apparatchiks, thanks to Harry Reid’s nixing of the minority party’s centuries-old right to filibuster objectionable judicial nominees.
It is up to Congress to assert its constitutional prerogatives, such as the power to tax that is being usurped by the EPA. That is, it is up to John Boehner and Mitch McConnell to stop our decline into authoritarian statism.
The situation is that bleak.
